Don't Sweat Quilting the Human Figure Photograph Selection Hopefully these tips will help you select a suitable photo for the class. Remember, you will be enlarging your picture to 11 x 17 so any problems such as poor focus will be magnified. Don't worry about extraneous items in the background since these can be eliminated when quilting.
Avoid using photos which have a high contrast or are under exposed. This will eliminate seeing the values of flesh tones clearly. Use your fill flash to eliminate harsh shadows such as these.
Similarly avoid over exposed photos which wash out detail.
A well exposed photo will reveal the subtle values of flesh tones while, at the same time, provide enough shadow to clearly outline features.
Make sure your figure is not lost in the background unless the background is very important to the story you are trying to tell. If you are using a digital image, crop it using a digital imaging editor if you have to.
In this image, you know what is important. The human figure assumes a predominant role. Getting the figure large in the original photo is better than cropping.
